With all these wonderful things that an acting agent in England could do to help further your career, what could possibly be the problem with having a talent agent? There are horror stories of talent agents ripping off people and the fact that a talent agent will want exclusivity doesn’t sit well with some talent. There is a valid reason for talent agents wanting an exclusive agreement with the talent they manage. Put yourself in the talent agent’s shoes. If the talent agent in England really does a good job and you end up making millions of dollars, they don’t want someone else reaping the benefits of the hard work, time and money they invested to help make you successful.
Another negative aspect of a bad talent agent is when a talent agent in England brings on too many talents and end up spending all of their time helping the talent who are hot get work and not putting any effort into getting the others started. For the talent who is being neglected, this is a lot of time wasted. In addition, some management contracts are structured so that the talent agent in England gets a commission on any work that the talent gets whether she/he had anything to do with acquiring that work or not. You may be working like crazy, making lots of money and end up paying a portion of it to the talent agent who you hardly ever hear from; that is a hard pill to swallow for most.
